The Art of the In-Between: A Season of Slower Days
There is something lovely about the changing of a wardrobe. As summer begins to fade, lighter pieces are folded away and familiar favourites are brought back into the light. The jacket you have missed, a favorite scarf, richer colors and textures that feel right for the cooler months ahead.
This season, we've introduced new styles and brought back our winter fabrics including wool, velvet. Corduroy stands out as a new fabric choice, which is perfect for the cooler months, alongside our signature prints, bringing a little more warmth and texture to the collection. Our new needlecord pocket dresses are a first for One Hundred Stars, made in a beautiful soft corduroy and designed for the slower days ahead.
But autumn rarely arrives all at once. There are still warm afternoons for a favourite dress, alongside crisp mornings that call for another layer. It is this space between seasons that makes getting dressed feel a little more thoughtful, as we begin to bring together pieces from both sides of the year.
Our Autumn/Winter collection began with this sense of place. Inspired by the quiet and rich landscapes of the Peak District, we looked to the colors and textures found close to home — cool gritstone, warm sandstone, faded grasses and deep woodland greens.
Against this muted backdrop, colour takes on a different quality. Rich jewel tones feel all the more striking; a deep berry brown, a flash of aqua blue or a botanical green bringing life to the softer shades of the landscape. Our prints are made to sit amongst these colours, echoing the natural world without quite blending into it.
The space between seasons is perhaps the most interesting time to dress. A dress can be carried into cooler days beneath a soft layer; a shirt can be worn open over a favourite print, ready to be buttoned when the air turns colder. Scarves are kept close by, jackets become part of the everyday, and outfits are built gradually around the weather.
There is no need to make a sudden change. Instead, pieces gather together slowly, allowing a wardrobe to move at its own pace from one season to the next.
There is something comforting about dressing for a day spent outdoors. Choosing a print in the morning, adding another layer before stepping outside, wrapping a scarf around your shoulders as the afternoon cools. The clothes become part of the rhythm of the day rather than something separate from it.
Perhaps this is what we love most about autumn: the invitation to be a little more considered. To choose pieces for their color, their texture, and the way they make us feel as the light begins to fade.
The countryside at this time of year is a study in quiet color. Beige stone, softened greens, brown earth and the grey-blue of distant hills create a subdued palette, interrupted only by the occasional flash of something brighter - berries amongst the hedgerows, a wildflower, the changing leaves.
Our prints take inspiration from this contrasting pop of color. Rich and expressive against quieter surroundings, they bring a little color to days that are beginning to turn inward. Prints like Crane brown, Rhodoleia, Orchid Teal and Amulet all bring a beautiful color to a winter landscape or cozy afternoon.
Fall changes the rhythm of a day. Walks become crisp and bracing, afternoons are spent with the windows open just a little, and by early evening there is a reason to light a lamp and settle somewhere warm.
These are the slower days we had in mind when creating the collection. Outfits for wandering through the countryside, for gathering around a table, for afternoons that have nowhere particular to be. Pieces to wear now, and layer as the season deepens.
As the landscape changes, so does our relationship with what we wear. Summer's lighter layers remain for a little longer, joined gradually by richer colours, deeper prints and warmer textures. There is no need to rush into the next season. Fall is a season to take slowly, to layer thoughtfully, notice the changing landscape and find beauty in the everyday rituals that come with cooler days.
